12,000 people came to the Arena in Port America's Cup on the 28th of April to see Tenor supergroup Il Divo, for the first performance of their European tour. Accompanied by a symphony orchestra of Valencian musicians they gave a polished, if a little short, performance. The name Il Divo translates from italian to 'divine male performer' and with their impeccable dress sense (got to be Armani suits!) and their 'Adonis' good looks, their main appeal is to women. Borne out by the audience, the majority of which were misty-eyed females. Their classically trained voices and harmonies are perfect, and they performed songs from their new Album, including Nights in White Satin, and Without You. They sang their 'popera' style songs in pairs, solos and together, the sound was great and the expected and forecast heavy rain held off until just minutes after they left the stage.

The band are the Spanish, Carlos Marín, the American, David Miller, the French, Sebastien Izambard and the Swiss, Urs Buhler and it was Carlos who did most of the talking saying that it as an honour to play in his home country and at the America's Cup. He went on to say that it was a particular pleasure to sing in Spain as worldwide the audience for their music is adult, where as here children as young as four or five are fans and write to them. Urs Buhler added that this was probably because Il Divo sing in Spanish. He also made a really curious comment about the America's Cup not being very popular in his home country of Switzerland which must have pleased Alinghi (the current Swiss holder of the America's Cup) boss Ernesto Bertarelli!

It was a great night, though marred a couple of things, one, the ticket prices were high for what amounted to just under one hour's performance and two, by some appalling front of house mismanagement which resulted in much confusion and problems for the security people trying to keep people away from the, near empty, vip area.
