VALENCIA IN JUNE AND THE SUMMER PLACIDO DOMINGO LIVE ACROSS EUROPE D'ESTIU Summer is a wonderful time to be in Valencia - there is so much to do and much of it is free or at little cost. Fiestas abound all over the community and you'll find free concerts and parties popping up unannounced almost every week. Noche de San Juan? Night of 23-24 June. Collect wood for a bonfire and food to cook on it and head on down to your nearest beach and, along with what seems the entire population of Valencia (or wherever you are on the Mediterranean) sit eating and drinking with friends around the fires until midnight when the tradition is to jump nine waves and make a wish. When you return from the sea you write down the bad things from the past year and your wishes for the new and throw the paper in the fire. There is also the tradition of jumping the fires too. It is a lovely night and is apparently in some danger from being banned by EU regulations next year - so get down there this week. (and take a sweater or too, it can get cold). If you fancy going further afield or happen to be in the vicinity Alicante's version of Las Fallas, Hogueras de San Juan, starts on 20 June through to the 24th. Partying in the street, Papier maché Sculptures (to be burned on the final night) and bullfights. Lots of fun for all the family. Meanwhile, to the north, Peñíscola has its own bit of Summer Magic with a festival of witchcraft and Magic fro the 19th to 23 June- street theatre, street magicians, star gazing and concerts are the order of the day (and, more importantly, the nights). The festival culminates on noche de San Juan with what sounds like a wondeful show of Fire (what else?) on the beach below Papa Luna's Castle. If you are a lover of a good olive oil then this weekend, 20-21 Jun you should head on up to Viver for the tenth annual Olive oil festival, not just for the oil but for the foods on offer, and it is a pretty village. it is on the N234 towards Teruel about an hour's drive from Valencia. All the outdoor pools in the community open this week - if you are a resident of a village, admission is either free or a season ticket can be purchased for the family at ludicrously low prices. If you are just visiting, admission is also cheap. Most (if not all) have a bar/restaurant attached where both the drinks and food are inexpensive and usually very good. On to culture d'Estiu... The Palau de les Arts is currently midway through its amazing, comprehensive celebration of Wagner and there are spectacular free outdoor performances of the show 'Anell de llum', from Barcelona theatre company La Fura dels Baus (responsible for the opening ceremony of the Barcelona Olympics) on 25 and 26 June at 22:30 its a wonderful spectacle of aerial ballet, light and sound. Get there early to secure a good view. Cinema Jove Starts 20 June for a week all over the city; in the Rialto, the Teatro Principal, IVAM, Instituto Francés, Centro Cultural Bancaja, Ciné Cité at Fuencarral, Colón metro station, and with nightly screenings in the open air in Viveros. It is an interesting and varied program which you can find on their website http://www.cinemajove.com. Valencia's 'Fiesta d'Estiu' is the Feria de Julio which takes place throughout next month and is celebrated with concerts from internationally famous names under the stars in the Viveros Gardens, A jazz festival in the Palau de la Musica and events and fireworks all over the city. www.feriadejulio.com The Festival D'Estiu, Sagunt a Escena begins early July. This year's line up is excellent and starts with the world Premiere of Raphael Amarga's new show and includes great classical and modern works of stage and ballet. There are two main venues for the festival, one of which is the beautiful Roman Amphitheatre of Sagunto (take a cushion, the seats are marble!) Festival Internacional de Benicassim is better known as FIB and is THE rock event of the summer each year in Comunidad Valenciana. This year is no exception with a fantastic lineup of great acts - half of England seems to fly to these shores to visit this small seaside resort just north of Valencia. If you haven't got tickets yet, it's probably too late as they sold out some time ago but it is still worth a visit to the town to take in the atmosphere during the musicfest - if you can't make it you can follow the exploits of Anita Darling and Lolita Devine here and on twitter and photos on thisisfib.tumblr.com. There will be cinema under the stars in most village squares during the coming months and usually a nightly show on Malvarrosa during July - all in Castellano though - rarely VOS - you'll have to wait for the IVAM's Filmoteca d'Estiu during August in the gardens of the Palau de la Música in the Rio Túria for Version Original films. MUST SEE NOW UNTIL NOVEMBER Four exhibitions with one common theme, Frontiers , or the lack of them. There are a total of 76 contemporary artists in the exhibition(s), each 'chapter' is themed and has a separate curator including Robert Wilson, Robert Storr, Aaron Betsky and Vicenzo Trione and featuring work from artists as diverse as Tapies and Rothko. It's a visual feast. MORE

Valencia's Teatro Principal becomes a Tablao Flamenco 20 May to 7 June Flamenco music and dance are the order of the say when the Teatro Principal becomes a Tablao Flamenco for 3 weeks. A great line-up of big names will each take the stage. This short season starts with Pitingo who presents Soulería, featuring not just pure flamenco music, but the music of such diverse musicians as Bob Marley, The Beatles, Police, Otis Redding, Ray Charles and Nirvana, among others. Pitingo will be aided and accompanied by the The Blake Heritage Singers, a gospel choir from New Orleans. Nuevo Ballet Español, choreographed by Rodriguez & Rojas, a dancing duo who have been likened to the likes of Take That, present Sangre, a flamenco ballet, described by their publicity machine as a Passionate panorama of Flamenco, a mix of traditional and modern. The show was received with mixed reviews when it ran for a short season at London's Sadlers Wells, but all the critics were unanimous in saying that it was worth seeing for the duo alone! María Pagés is one of Spain’s leading flamenco virtuosos and the recipient of her country’s highest honor, the National Dance Award. Her latest work, Autoretrato, was originally commissioned by Baryshnikov for Baryshnikov Arts Center. Performed by her company of nine extraordinary dancers and musicians, Autoretrato continues Pagés innovative journey into the depths of flamenco and beyond. Pitingo, 20 - 24 May, presents Soulería. Nuevo Ballet Español, 28 - 31 May, presents Sangre (Blood). Maria Pagés, 3 - 7 June, presents Autoretrato (Self-portrait). REVIEW Well-eat your heart our Douglas Bunn!!! Hickstead will never be able to offer such value for money and good viewing as The Global Cahmpions Tour and the City of Arts and Sciences offered us this weekend. For just 5 euros per day (12 euros for three days, if you paid in advance), Jo Public was given the privilege of watching the world's top riders and showjumping horses perform in the most magnificent setting. The pool in front of the Science Museum became the arena by 'simply' draining it and filling with Fibresand - a special type of sand used for horses and sow jumping. The jumps were wonderfully colourful, the weather, although not overly sunny, was breezey and was perfect for the horses and riders. The husband and I have the most wonderful sunburnt faces with white panda eyes!. Unfortunately for those that did not get up early, they soon discovered that seating was not in plentiful supply. Strangely, there were no programmes for sale, so no-one really knew what they were watching. The only piece of paper I had was a list of the classes that I downloaded off the Champions Tour website - it wasn't, however, accurate. The start times were different, and on Saturday one class didn't happen! In my humble opinion, it would have been nicer to have had programmes available, both for those that know something about the sport, and for those that know nothing about it. It seemed that the Valencians knew very little, as they waved their flags in the faces of the Spanish horses whilst they were in the arena and clapping and whooping mid-round!! Amazing really, how most of the horses tolerated it! My only two gripes with the entire event are one, that the loos were badly signposted, it wasn't until the end of the second day that I found out I we could have used those inside the Museum, instead of trekking into the car park! Gripe number two is that the facilities for the disabled were negligible. People in wheelchairs had to view the event peering though the bars of fencing and barriers. Saturday was the main day, with The Global Champions Tour Class, which was televised by Eurosport. With over 30 World Class Riders with their wonderful horses, we were treated to a wonderful feast of top quality horsemanship over huge difficult fences. And the result-it was won by one of those many Whittakers from Yorkshire! So we were able to stand for the National Anthem and sing our hearts out! So thank you to John Whittaker! No doubt he is still smiling at his success-after all, he did win 285,000 euros! A huge pot for showjumpers. So, well done Valencia, Oxer Sport, and GCT for hosting such a wonderful event in such wonderful surroundings. ©2009 S PRYKE |
