REVIEW
THE GLOBAL CHAMPIONS TOUR RETURNS TO VALENCIA 07 MAY IT WAS A GREAT SUCCESS LAST TIME IT WAS HERE, AS SALLY PRYKE, OUR CORRESPONDENT FOR ALL THINGS HORSEY, FOUND OUT.
GLOBAL CHAMPIONS TOUR
8TH TO 10TH MAY 2009

Well-eat your heart our Douglas Bunn!!! Hickstead will never be able to offer such value for money and good viewing as The Global Cahmpions Tour and the City of Arts and Sciences offered us this weekend.

For just 5 euros per day (12 euros for three days, if you paid in advance), Jo Public was given the privilege of watching the world's top riders and showjumping horses perform in the most magnificent setting. The pool in front of the Science Museum became the arena by 'simply' draining it and filling with Fibresand - a special type of sand used for horses and sow jumping. The jumps were wonderfully colourful, the weather, although not overly sunny, was breezey and was perfect for the horses and riders. The husband and I have the most wonderful sunburnt faces with white panda eyes!.

Unfortunately for those that did not get up early, they soon discovered that seating was not in plentiful supply. Strangely, there were no programmes for sale, so no-one really knew what they were watching. The only piece of paper I had was a list of the classes that I downloaded off the Champions Tour website - it wasn't, however, accurate. The start times were different, and on Saturday one class didn't happen! In my humble opinion, it would have been nicer to have had programmes available, both for those that know something about the sport, and for those that know nothing about it. It seemed that the Valencians knew very little, as they waved their flags in the faces of the Spanish horses whilst they were in the arena and clapping and whooping mid-round!! Amazing really, how most of the horses tolerated it!

My only two gripes with the entire event are one, that the loos were badly signposted, it wasn't until the end of the second day that I found out I we could have used those inside the Museum, instead of trekking into the car park! Gripe number two is that the facilities for the disabled were negligible. People in wheelchairs had to view the event peering though the bars of fencing and barriers.

Saturday was the main day, with The Global Champions Tour Class, which was televised by Eurosport.  With over 30 World Class Riders with their wonderful horses, we were treated to a wonderful feast of top quality horsemanship over huge difficult fences. And the result-it was won by one of those many Whittakers from Yorkshire! So we were able to stand for the National Anthem and sing our hearts out! So thank you to John Whittaker! No doubt he is still smiling at his success-after all, he did win 285,000 euros! A huge pot for showjumpers.

So, well done Valencia, Oxer Sport, and GCT for hosting such a wonderful event in such wonderful surroundings.

VALENCIA IN MARCH
It's March! And that means one thing for Valencia - Las Fallas!
The 15th of March sees the beginning, in Valencia, of what has to be one of the most spectacular and exciting 5 days in the whole of Europe.

Fallas is the most extraordinary festival, celebrated only in the Comunidad de Valencia and mainly in the city itself. Supposedly originating from a time way back when carpenters would chuck out old offcuts of wood into the street and set fires to welcome spring - the festival has grown and grown into a feast for all the senses; Noise- fireworks everyday at lunchtime(01-19 March) and at night (15-19 March), Firecrackers- Adults and children alike buy petardos (bangers) to throw in the streets throughout the month of March. Smells- Churros and Buñuelos and chocolate, on sale on every street corner. Sights -Huge, Gorgeous and Colourful Papier Maché sculptures - over 500 around the city. Parades - 50,000 Beautifully Costumed Falleras carrying flowers through the city to offer to a giant wooden Virgin Mary. A parade of Fire through the streets of the city. Moors and Christians. Music- Brass bands and dancing on every street, Concerts in the park. Bullfights - every day at the Plaza de Toros. Fun - All over the city. Come and wallow in Las Fallas - the most spectacular of all the European Fiestas! Our full report including timetables of fireworks, parades and Bullfights. Read All about it here

The Magdalena in Castellón

Castellón de la Plana celebrates the founding of the city in a series of festivities From 7th to 14th March dedicated to La Magdalena or Mary Magdalene. Don't miss out this weekend on the events that open these moving and joyful celebrations: on Saturday 6th March there is the official proclamation of festivities and the colourful Cabalgata del Pregó parade; and on Sunday 7th, there is a pilgrimage to the chapel of La Magdalena, known as the Romeria de les Canyes, which is one of the most important historical, cultural, anthropological and festive events in Castellón de la Plana. It is also the origin of La Magdalena celebrations, which commemorate the founding of the city.

Every year, on the third Sunday of Lent, which this year falls on 7th March, the Romeria de les Canyes sets off from the Town Hall led by political, ecclesiastical and festive authorities, and heads towards el Caminàs, an ancient pre-Roman road, which will take them to the chapel of St Mary Magdalene. There, as tradition dictates, the ancient Gotjos de la Santa chants will be performed. On the afternoon of Sunday 7th, there will also be a procession known as the Gaiatas. more here
