Hello!
Welcome to our eleventh newsletter
It is now officially autumn, the weather is slightly changeable, Indian Summer one minute and torrential rain the next. It will come as no surprise that October 12th is the fiftieth anniversary of the great flood of Valencia. It is thanks to this flood and, it has to be said, some very forward thinking city fathers, that the great park, Rio Turia, runs through this fair city.

There is a great deal happening in the city this month,

Lots of excellent live music, classical, opera and rock. Film at the Valencia Film Festival, Mostra de Valencia. Exhibitions of every kind including the 2007 edition of Casa Decor and there is a massive exhibition of the spooky works of HR Giger, the man responsible for the design of Alien.

There are fireworks again, yes, I know, when are there not? - on the 8th of October, the eve of Valencia Day (bank holiday!) - International Festival of Fireworks - one of the best displays of the year.

There is also a Moors and Christians in the Historic Centre - and In Patraix, one of the last fiestas of Summer.

By the time you read this, Chelsea will have played against Valencia CF at the Mestalla and we'll have a full report and photos the next day here. For all you football fans, this will be the first of a regular football column on thisisvalencia.com

Palau de la Musica
There is nothing like a live classical concert from a world famous orchestra. The Palau de la Musica is celebrating its 20th anniversary this season with an exciting line up of concerts and recitals from musicians and orchestras from all over the globe - in the next couple of months we can expect concerts from ORCHESTRE PHILARMONIQUE DE LIEGE, ORQUESTA SINFÓNICA DEL MEDITERRÁNEO , EUROPEAN UNION BAROQUE ORCHESTRA , BERLINER BACH AKADEMIE, CORAL NORDLYS DE TARNBY-COPENHAGUE - and more throughout the season

There are also great free concerts on a regular basis by the various bands of the Comunidad, a full timetable will be on thisisvalencia.com by the time you read this.

There are always exhibitions (at the moment, one of the pop art of Isabel Gómez) and the Palau gardens have regular fountain displays set to music. The building is lovely too, with a bright and airy cafe.

Palau de Congresos.
One of the joys of doing this job is discovering talent that one previously was unaware of - this month there is a musical comedy group from Argentina on at the Palau de Congresos. Les Luthiers have been around since 1962, they are so named beause much of their very funny act is based on their playing of home-made musical instruments (Luthier is the french word for a musical instrument maker). Some of the instruments are extremely sophisticated and the members of the group are highly skilled singers and musicians and give high class performances of intelligent humour - not to be missed - they are playing from the 11th to the 18th October (except 15th)

Plaza de Toros
If you missed Il Divo earlier in the year and have been kicking yourself ever since - this news may help!
The Ten Tenors (or TTT as they like to be called) are coming up from their home down under to undertake their first Spanish tour. They are appearing live at the Plaza De Toros for one night only on the 19th October. Like Il Divo they sing a mixture of modern and classical. Their latest album 'Here's to the Heroes features many works from John Barry - so you now know what to expect.

Films in English at the cinema in Valencia
Not the best of months for VOS in the Cinema. We can find only two new releases - The Angelina Jolie's A Mighty Heart - it is about the search for Wall Street Journa reporter Daniel Pearl after he is kidnapped in Karachi. at the Cine Cite Espai

The other is Boy Culture, a gay 'hustler' movie - and from the reviews, not a very good film at that. At Babel

However, there may be better news for movie fans, the XXVIII Mostra de Valencia begins on 16th October. We say may, because at the time of going to press there has yet to be a published programme. Judging on previous years though, there will be a healthy smattering of films in English - check here for updates!

There is also a children's section called La Mostreta and it all takes place at the ABC Park cinema this time around.

Alien Art by HR Giger
Swiss artist H.R. Giger has his very first exhibition in Spain, organized by the Vice-rectorate of Culture of the Polytechnic University of Valencia.

The exhibition will feature approximately 50 artworks that cover some of the most interesting creative facets of this most prolific creator, in sculptures, graphic works, designs, painting and drawings.

This is a rare opportunity to study first-hand the oeuvre of this extraordinary artist and to enter his biomechanical world. Included among Giger’s iconic works on display will be designs for the movie Alien and Dune, his Biomechanoids, portraits of Li, automatic drawings and a wide range selection of his early prints. Giger is appearing at the invitation only opening on October 18th - the exhibition runs from the 19th of October to 05 December

Pinazo at IVAM
A wonderful exhibition of paintings will be on display at IVAM, a major exhibition of the works of Ignacio Pinazo Camarlench (1849-1916), who was born in Godella, just outside the city and is considered one of the finest painters of his time.

Casa Decor
Want ideas for your interior design? This is the place to go. Lots of rooms designed by key designers in the industry. more here

The Great flood of Valencia 1957.MUVIM
50 years ago, on the 12th October, after a 'gota fria' (a rainfall so fierce it is known as the 'cold drop') The Rio Turia, which for most of the year was little more than a stream, broke its banks, flooding the city and causing untold damage and an unknown number of deaths.

It changed the face of Valencia, and its story is told at a new exhibition opening on the 5th october at MUVIM, c/ Quevedo, 10. Fascinating Stuff.

Chelsea play Valencia CF - 03 October
Our ace reporters were there and we will have an exclusive report from the ground on thisisvalencia.com as part of a regular new feature on the site - click here

Barbara's Latest column - ¿HABLA ESPAÑOL?
After a year in Valencia I thought I would by now be semi-fluent. I am a hopeless fantasist. I get by – which is simply not good enough. So, I am off to lecciones in español. I think. Going to sign up at the local evening class I am asked by a sadly resigned secretary if I can speak English. ‘Ye-es,’ I say, baffled by his query but unable to ask the question needed for the correct answer.

Anita's Latest column - HEAT
It looked warm and sunny out this morning, and I had had the fan on all night as I slept, so I got dressed in last year's silver thong sandals, my thinnest black skinny trousers and a plain, loose, white tee shirt and had a light chicken salad and some chilled water for lunch in my best efforts to remain refreshed and unruffled. Then I left the flat and stepped out on the street and boom! Right into the blast of someone's hot air-dryer. more

Gooru's Latest column - WORK
My life is a a series of plans gone awry!

La Goora and I had planned that this August we would take it easy and enjoy the city, the beach and the surrounding countryside. Armed with a bag of books and magazines and a picnic, we would set out on little forays to discover new areas and just plain take it easy.
Instead, we have worked in the intense heat...more

33rd AMERICAS CUP
As a consequence of the uncertainty and the delays arising from the Golden Gate Yacht Club Law suit in New York, AC Management (ACM) is concerned that the feasibility of organising the next America's Cup in Valencia in 2009 has been effectively compromised.

ACM will in the coming days engage in consultations with the Defender, the Challenger of Record, the Competitors and the Spanish Authorities on this specific matter.

ACM is considering all options, including the possibility of postponing the event to a later date.

In the meantime, ACM understands that SNG continues to try to find a resolution of the dispute pending with Golden Gate Yacht Club in New York.More here!
