CIRCUS

It's Christmas in Valencia and the circus is in town. Actually there are no less than five circuses in town!

Three are the traditional style with animals, clowns, jugglers and high wire performers.

Gran Circo Wonderland at Plaza de Toros promises a brand new show with 6 Siberian tigers, twelve acrobatic cyclists, exotic animals, clowns and other wonders. Now until January - tickets from 6-42 euros

Circo Americano is a three ring circus and is offering a show full of surprises and excitement with acts from all over the world. It's home is next to the El Saler Shopping centre from now until 6 january and tickets are between 8 and 45 euros

Gran Circo Mundial present Voyage to Infinity - with everything from performing sealions to breakdance and underwater ballet - you can find this circus by the Alameda near the Calatrava Bridge from 06 December and tickets are 10-45 euros

Cirque du Soleil are in town for only four nights at Feria Valencia, with their new show Delirium. No animals, just humans and spectacular entertainment and music - 13-16 December inclusive and prices between 41.50 and 75 euros

Circo Gran Fele has been described as a smaller Cirgue du Soleil, Their new show Samsara starts on 15 December in the Jardines de Viveros

So there you have it, as much fun at the circus as you could possibly want!

Oh, and if funfairs are your thing, then head on down to Malvarrosa, the huge annual Christmas funfair has moved there for this year.

Christmas Shopping
The bigger stores and shopping centres have special Sunday and festival openings throughout December. They will have their special openings on 02, 08, 16 and 23 December. They will also open on the 13 January

Motor Show
the Valencia Motor show is on at the Feria de Valencia from the 05-09 December - see next years models now!

Dog Show
The 28th National Dog show takes place on the 15-16 December at the Feria

Expo Jove
This huge fair, aimed at children and young people is a must, There are hundreds of attractions each year at this excellent fair. Workshops on dance, theatre, pyrotechnics (of course!). Go Karting and sports, computer games - it is a great day out for all the family. Tickets are only 4euros for the day. 26 December to 04 January at the Feria de Valencia

A Century Ahead
Todo un Siglo Delante is an exhibition celebrating the last 25 years in Valencia and looking ahead to the future - it is on in the Square in front of the Nuevo Centro shopping Centre.

Christmas Decorations
The Christmas lights in the Plaza Ayuntamiento are always good to see, we love the way they decorate the tall palm trees and outline the Town Hall. The Mercado de Colón is also usually very beautifully decorated and there are regular concerts in there over the next few weeks. Look out for the Beléns (Nativity scenes) all over town, there is usually a huge one at Nuevo Centro - but the 'century ahead' exhibition seems to be thee in its place this year. Check thisisvalencia.com later in the week for more on this.

LUPE - LA GRAN TIRANA
D
o you hanker to see more theatre in Valencia but spend much of the performance playing catch up, as you struggle to make your understanding of Spanish fit with what is being spoken on stage? Well, help now is at hand. On May 25th a play about the life of La Lupe, the Cuban singer, opens at Teatro Flumen. It is performed in Castellano, but has a synopsis of the scenes in English as an addition to the programme. 'Lupe-La Gran Tirana' tells the incredible story of a woman as much celebrated as she was damned. In the 1960s in Havana Picasso declared her a musical genius. Less than 30 years later she was struggling to survive in the New York Bronx. The production has overcome its own language hurdle, with an English director with limited Spanish working with a Cuban actress with little or no English. Their like minded approach to theatre and a need to communicate on another level has created more than a little magic. Yamilet Duran Sosa is La Lupe, Samantha Holland directs and Miguel Angel Rodriguez provides the music. Go out and catch some culture in Spanish, whatever your level of fluency, in the knowledge that you have some kind of back up when someone asks you what was it all about!

LE MANS IN VALENCIA

On the 5th and the 6th of May, the cars that will race in the mythical 24 hours of Le Mans will come to Valencia in one of the five events that make up the calendar.
They are calling it the Valencia 1,000 kilometres, and it will be the last opportunity for drivers and teams to compete before Le Mans, held in mid-June.
The 1,000 kilometres will mean that the drivers will have to complete a total of a total of 250 laps of the winding course of the Ricardo Tormo Circuit of the Valencia Region in Cheste. And the good news is that entry is free, and only 10 euros for entry to the paddock.Valencia joins the great circuits of Monza (Italy), Nurburgring (Germany), Spa (Belgium) and Silverstone (Great Britain), which all celebrate this championship. 160 drivers from 26 different nationalities grouped in 44 teams from 11 countries participate in the championship. An average of 40 cars occupied the starting grid with 33 teams. Peugeot has announced the presence of their prototype 908 in all the races to prepare for their race at the 24 hours of Le Mans.

Maoris, Moors and Christians

Another event that may be adversely affected by this seriously unpleasant and very unusual bad weather we're having in Valencia at the moment, the historical meeting of the Maoris of New Zealand and the Moors and Christians of Valencia.
From 3 pm in the Ayuntamiento 14 April it's New Zealand Day in Valencia. Maori Dancers, ( I saw them at Port America's Cup yesterday, looking large and mighty but a little disheveled like everyone else around in the rain!) Maori Singers, including the famous Hinewehi Mohi, whose album 'Oceania' has been a worldwide bestseller, will join forces with the Moors and Christians for a performance and a parade to the Museum Benlliure in Calle Blanquerias. There they will open a special exhibition of New Zealand Art. Along the afternoon the Fallera Mayor Infantil will be presented to Hinewehi.

MACROEVENTO OF THE YEAR!

Prada, the internationally famous Italian fashion house, and one of principle sponsors of the Luna Rossa team in the long-awaited America's Cup, is about to hold one of the biggest events in Valencia.
The date? The 15th of April.
Where? The famous, just reformed and finished Valencian Central Market.(Mercado Central)
Why? To celebrate the America's Cup of course.
Who's going? Everyone that's anyone.
With a VIP guest list of 1500 people, we're talking about a big party. It has been leaked that Sharon Stone, Brad Pitt (yes ladies, you read right) and Angelina Jolie are amongst the hundreds of big stars attending
And they will all get a specially prepared dinner, with banqueting tables up and down the huge aisles of the central market. It is said that the stall holders will cater the event, but also rumoured that it will be catered by another company that has nothing to do with the central market (I do hope they use the central market produce though!).
Not only have Prada had to pay more than 3000 euros to use the central market for one night, but they have also had to ask for the building plan (as they are not quite finished yet) to make sure that the venue will be building free and perfect for this one night. They have had to promise that the market will be cleaned up and perfect by early next morning, so that it can go back to normal business, the same promise Michelin had to make when they took over the central market for a smaller and more modest event a while ago. It is also rumoured that the organisation will pay each stall holder around 350 euros to thank them for their contribution. Think about that seriously, more than 400 stalls, 350 euros...140,000 euros - Minimum.
This is going to be the Valencia's social event of the year.
I'm waiting for my invite!
